When to go
- Spring, April–May. Blooming slopes and a rushing river, but muddy trails. Don't go high without experience — there's still snow up there.
- Summer, June–August. Greenery, berries, mushrooms and shepherds on the meadows. The best time for treks to the glaciers and lakes.
- Autumn, September–October. Golden birches and few people. Nights are cold; you'll need a warm sleeping bag.
- Winter, November–March. A frozen waterfall and a hot pool. Only the lower routes are suitable, in non-slip footwear.
At weekends the gorge is busy with day-trippers from Bishkek. If you want peace and quiet, come on a weekday.
Safety rules
- Don't hike alone. Always tell someone your route and when you'll be back.
- Protect yourself from the sun: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must.
- Watch the weather. Even in July, cold rain or hail can arrive in the afternoon.
- Cross rivers in the morning. By evening the water rises with meltwater from the glaciers.
- Mind the altitude. Altitude sickness can occur on passes and near glaciers. With a headache and nausea, descend.
- Check your clothes. In spring and early summer there are ticks in the grass.
- Keep away from flocks. Shepherd dogs take guarding the sheep very seriously.
Emergency number
The single emergency number in Kyrgyzstan is 112.
Being a good guest in the mountains
Carry all your rubbish out. Don't light fires on dry grass. Don't break juniper — it grows very slowly. Keep quiet near mazars (sacred sites) and don't touch the ribbons tied to holy trees.
